What is Sivananda Yoga?
Sivananda Yoga is one of the most mystical and comprehensive yoga traditions in existence. Swami Sivananda (1887–1963) founded the Yoga of the Sun (1887–1963). At the heart of its practices and precepts lies the wisdom of the ancient tradition of Vedanta, Ayurveda , yogic philosophy, and ancient Indian texts, among other bodies of philosophical, psychological, medicinal, and spiritual knowledge.
It is a gentle and effective form of yoga that promotes physical, mental, and spiritual health. Because it is a slow and relaxing method, it is recommended for beginners, as it allows for excellent memorization of the asanas and allows for variations if necessary. Practicing on a non-slip Namastecita yoga mat can make your experience even more enriching, safe, and elevated.
Each Sivananda Yoga practice begins and ends with chants and mantras, proper breathing (pranayama), sun salutations (Surya Namaskar) as a warm-up, the twelve basic postures (asanas, meditative seats) and deep relaxation (savasana).
The twelve postures
The Sivananda system synthesizes the benefits of hatha yoga in twelve asanas that are always present in this practice , following a precise order that allows the systematic movement of each important part of the body in a balanced way, enhancing prana or vital energy, keeping the mind calm and without the need to think about anything other than each entry, stay and exit of each yoga posture. Since yoga is a spiritual system with a physical component , this non-competitive approach helps the practitioner achieve much more than a healthy body.
